This zig-zag fence is the latest project on the old farm. Putting all
of the trees I cut down to use. The magic number is 6'6". This is the
length of each log. When I first started building these fences years
back I was using 11'. Way too long and more wasted lumber. I use
probably 90% of the trees I cut down using the 6'6" lengths and they
are much more manageable. Anyone can build these fences. Just
place a brick, stone, or log at the base of each intersection to keep
the bottom log off the ground. If the logs can support themselves over
a span of 7' then they are good enough for fencing. I usually draw the
line if they are about the size of a pool cue though. This fence is
easy to move and reassemble since there are no nails or concrete
involved. The weight of the logs support the fence. I have an over abundance of Sweet Gum trees on my land, so these trees are used a good deal in my fences. Cedar is great to use because the logs are weather resistant, but a pain to clean because of all the small limbs. I
DO NOT cut down my trees just for fencing though. The fence is a result
of forest management and 'forced' tree diversity on my part to help
prevent disease and overcrowding. I prefer to prune the trees instead
of the trees pruning each other (but that is for another blog). (Hey Lapha, the black rocks at the base of the fence are the river rocks you left at your old place.) |
